What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade does what it says on the label; it guarantees a better deal to producers in the developing world.

This means a fair and stable price which covers their production costs, along with a premium that their organisation will be able to reinvest either in the business or social and environmental schemes among the wider community.

The list of Fairtrade products is growing, there are now over 100 including:- tea, coffee, chocolate, bananas, sugar ... and they are available in a wide range of supermarkets, small grocers and cafes both nationally and in the Brighton & Hove area.

Too many farmers in the developing world have to contend with fluctuating prices that may not even cover what it costs to produce their crop. So Fairtrade can make a big impact on their day-to-day life, on their future and on their families.

The Fairtrade labelling organisation is the international certifying body for Fairtrade labelled products. Its aim is to maintain the high standards and practices of Fairtrade. It does this by working with national Fairtrade organisations such as the UK Fairtrade Foundation. Their website has more details on national Fairtrade issues along with information on Fairtrade food and drink. There are also fascinating stories from the people who benefit most from Fairtrade.
