Brighton and Hove Smarter Uniforms

Press Release

Brighton and Hove Smarter Uniforms

Save money, raise school funds & save precious resources.

Brighton and Hove Fair Trade Steering Group, supported by the local Council and the Fairtrade Foundation in London, has started a city-wide initiative to re-use school uniforms called “Brighton and Hove Smarter Uniforms.”

The aim: to save parents money; to fundraise for schools and to get the most wear out of school uniforms which will curb the amount of clothing that goes to landfill and the amount of resources used in the production of surplus clothing.

According to the Love Your Clothes campaign (http://loveyourclothes.org.uk), “School uniforms can be a big expense: UK families spend around £52 million each year on new items.  And every year an estimated £140 million worth (around 350,000 tonnes) of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK.  There is absolutely no need for any clothing or textiles to make its way into a bin and this is both a significant environmental loss and a missed business opportunity.”

This scheme is currently being piloted with St Paul’s C. of E. Nursery and Primary School. Local shop FAIR at 21 Queens Road, Brighton BN1 3XA contains a section dedicated to St Paul’s school wear, where parents can come to drop off and purchase preloved St Paul’s school uniforms. On the 9th March 2017 Brighton and Hove Smarter Uniforms will also be setting up a pop-up stall for preloved school uniforms at St Paul’s School during pick-up times.

Please contact us at bhsmarteruniforms@gmail.com if you would like your school to be involved.
